“I had my bariatric surgery through Phoenix almost three years ago and it has been absolutely life-changing. I can’t recommend Phoenix highly enough.
The medical and psychological care are phenomenal and the administrative support is superb."
“The best medical care I have ever received. From the initial phone call I was treated with dignity and respect. No question was ever too small, I was always made to feel like there was time to talk to me."
If losing weight and gaining it back is something you know too well, the latest bariatric surgery techniques can provide a long-term solution to weight problems, help improve your health and your enjoyment of life. Bariatric surgery, also know as stomach surgery or gastric surgery is the process of reducing your stomach capacity in order to assist you in losing weight. There are a range of different surgical and non-surgical bariatric procedures that can assist with weight loss.
We regularly perform gastric bypass, gastric band, gastric sleeve and SADIS (duodenal switch) procedures. We also offer revisional weight loss surgery for those who have had a previous operation and aren’t happy with the outcome.
All of this is done with keyhole surgery meaning that the recovery time is reduced.
If you would rather look at non-surgical procedures we offer two gastric balloon options – Allurion Elipse and Orbera. Deciding which procedure is the right one for you can be difficult. At Phoenix Health we can talk you through the pros and cons of each option so that you can be confident you have made the right choice.
Cost is important, when considering any surgical procedure, but safety is always paramount.
Please don’t risk your life and health by choosing cut-price overseas surgery. UK surgeons regularly see the harm done to patients resulting from botched weight loss operations and inadequate aftercare arrangements.
Our GMC-registered UK-trained bariatric surgeons are regulated to a very high standard. They will have an honest and open discussion with you about the risks and benefits of different kinds of procedure and answer any questions you have. You can be confident you are getting good advice, and being treated by a reputable team who will always be there for you afterwards.
In the right hands even more complex procedures like gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy are now safer than gallbladder removal or hip replacement. In the wrong hands they can ruin your life.
If you like the idea of weight loss procedures, the next step is to arrange a series of in-depth assessments with one of our surgeons and dieticians. We also ask you to complete a screening questionnaire designed to identify unhelpful psychological or emotional factors (such as binge eating) that might prevent you getting the most out of your treatment. Our psychologists will spend 30 minutes with you in a one-to-one pre-treatment consultation if this is required. All of this is effectively free, as the upfront Triple Assessment fee of £250 (£100 for balloon patients), is fully refunded when you undergo treatment with Phoenix Health.
In the unlikely event that you’re not suited to any weight loss procedure, you won’t have wasted your money as we will discuss alternative options with you at no further charge. It is very rare for someone to be unsuitable for any kind of weight loss intervention providing your BMI is over 27.
We don’t believe that ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to aftercare. Our packages allow you to design a programme that suits your individual needs.
You can choose
All of our packages include support from dieticians who specialise in the nutritional needs of someone who has had stomach surgery and all give you on-going access to our surgeons and nurses.
Looking after your health is the best investment you can make.
Prices vary depending on the procedure and the aftercare option you select. We can arrange finance to spread the cost over 2-5 years.
Bariatric surgery comes with a minimum of 2 years of unlimited aftercare consultations. Gastric Band packages start from £6,450, Gastric Bypass from £10,995, and Gastric Sleeve from £10,250.
A single Elipse Balloon with 6 months’ aftercare is £4,150, or you can opt for 2 balloons with 12 month’s support for £7,300 (the 2nd Elipse is placed 5-6 months after the first) .
How much weight can I expect to lose with weight loss procedures?
The amount you will lose depends on the procedure you choose and your starting weight. Balloons are for those with lower starting weights and give the smallest weight loss as they are temporary procedures, Surgical procedures such as band, sleeves and gastric bypass cause significantly more weight loss and so are more suited to those with a lot of weight to lose
Elipse Balloons – Clinical studies have shown that patients lose about 14% of their body weight in the first 4 months after Elipse placement. So if you weighed 95kg (15 stones) we’d expect to see just over 2 stones weight loss, most of which is lost in the first 2 months.
Orbera Balloons – Clinical studies have shown that patients typically lose 10-15% of their body weight in the first 4 months after Orbera balloon placement. So if you weighed 95kg (15 stones) we’d expect to see 1.5 to 2 stones weight loss, most of which is lost in the first 4 months.
Gastric Band – Two years after gastric band surgery we’d expect you to have lost about 50% of the extra weight you were carrying. So if you were 10 stones overweight this would mean losing 5 stones, but you were 16 stones above your ideal weight at the time of surgery we’d expect you to lose about 8 stones.
Gastric Sleeve – A year after a sleeve gastrectomy we’d expect you to have lost about 2/3 of the extra weight you were carrying. So if you were 9 stones overweight this would mean losing 6 stones, but you were 15 stones above your ideal weight at the time of surgery we’d expect you to lose about 10 stones.
Gastric Bypass – A year after bypass surgery we’d expect you to have lost about 70-80% of the extra weight you were carrying. So if you were 10 stones overweight this would mean losing 7.5 stones, but you were 16 stones above your ideal weight at the time of surgery we’d expect you to lose about 12 stones.
Are weight loss procedures safe?
All modern bariatric operations are very safe, with a mortality of less than 1 in 1,000 in reputable centres.
This takes into account the risk of death associated with ALL of the major early complications combined and is lower than that seen after hip and knee replacement surgery and similar to that after removal of the gallbladder.
At Phoenix Health our 90-day mortality after gastric bypass is less than 1 in 2,000.
How much does weight loss surgery cost?
Prices vary depending on the procedure and the aftercare option you select. We can arrange finance to spread the cost over 3-5 years.
Stomach surgery comes with a minimum of 2 years of unlimited aftercare consultations. Gastric Band packages start from £6,450, Gastric Bypass from £10,995, and Gastric Sleeve from £10,250.

For a 6-month support package with the Orbera Balloon, the price is £4,495, but if you’d prefer the Orbera 365 (which stays in for 12 months), it’s £5,250.
What is the difference between the Allurion Elipse Balloon and the Orbera Balloon?
Both the Allurion Elipse and Orbera balloons have delivered good results in clinical trials and so which one you choose is really a matter of personal preference.
The main differences between the two are that Orbera balloons require two hospital admissions 6- 12 months apart (to insert and remove the balloon) as we use an endoscope (a swallowable camera) under sedation during the procedure.
An Allurion Elipse balloon is swallowed with a glass of water in the outpatient X-ray department and does not usually need to be removed as it deflates spontaneously after 4 months and is passed from the body naturally.
Orbera balloons remain in the body for longer than Elipse, but there is little evidence that this results in greater weight loss (most of which occurs in the first 2 months for both types of balloon).
What is the waiting time for weight loss treatment?
We can book you in for a free (refundable) assessment within a matter of days.
Once this is completed, if you are suitable for treatment and happy to go ahead, we can give you a provisional admission date.
It is always a good idea to have a ‘cooling off’ period when taking big decisions, but even so it’s unusual to have to wait more than 4-6 weeks between consultation and surgery.
You will be treated in a private hospital with a choice of locations around the UK.
Can I get weight loss surgery in Ireland?
At the present time we only offer a gastric balloon service (Elipse and Orbera) and outpatient follow-up/gastric band adjustment clinics in Northern Ireland.
Irish patients wishing to undergo sleeve or gastric bypass surgery are treated in England and followed up either virtually or face-to-face in Belfast.
